10 Natural DIY Treatments for Sunburn

As much as the Sun is necessary to keep us healthy and thriving, it is biggest enemy that the skin could possibly have. Going out into the sun and getting back home unharmed is a near impossible task, especially in tropical countries like India.

With a few natural DIY treatments however, you can reduce the harm that the sun causes to our skin. We’ve listed out a few treatments for sunburn.
1. Cucumber

Cucumber(also known as keera colloquially) is a great hydrant, coolant and anti-tanning agent that can work wonders against sunburn. All you have to do is take a piece of cucumber and rub it all over your face every time you return home from a day out in the sun and wash it off after a while. You can also make a pack out of cucumber juice to help treat sunburns.

2. Lemon juice

Lemon is a naturally acting bleaching agent that helps fight tan and other skin ailments like rashes and pimples. Applying diluted lemon juice all over your face using a brush is one way to use it as an anti-tanning agent. Another way is to rub the squeezed out pieces of lemon onto your skin. Since lemon juice is a powerful bleaching agent, there could be a little itching. If there’s too much of a burning sensation, you might want to consult your doctor before you use it again.

3. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera, the magic herb has got anti-sunburn benefits among all of its other uses. It also acts as a coolant and a hydrant on your skin. Aloe Vera gel is widely available in the market. So all you have to do is find a good brand and use it as a mask over your skin. Over time, this can eventually lead to removal of tan and a healing of sun burn of your skin.

4. Potatoes
Potatoes, although not very often used are great anti-tanning agents. Make a paste out of potatoes or extract some potato juice and rub it over your skin. Leave it on and wash it off. On using potatoes this way on a regular basis, it can help reduce tan on the skin.

5. Milk

You read that right. Milk can actually help reduce the tan and the sun burn that has been formed over your skin. Make a cool milk compress by freezing milk, packing it into a gauze cloth and rubbing it over your skin. This helps cool the skin along with also healing the sun-burnt areas of your skin. All the benefits that milk can bestow upon our skin are perhaps the reason that ancient Egyptian queens bathed in milk.

6. Baking soda or corn starch
It has probably not been widely known, but baking soda can do wonders in removing the tan off your skin. All you have to do is make a paste of cornstarch and some water (preferably cold) and leave it over your face in the form of a mask. Wash it off in about 10-15 mins. Along with working against sun burn, you’ll notice a certain shine on your face after a few days of using baking soda.

7. Vinegar

An age old remedy for a whole lot of skin ailments, vinegar is a great way to cool of that stubborn sunburn. Dip cotton pads in vinegar and rub them over the sun burned area. Leave it on for a while and wash it off to notice a scaling down in the extent of the tan almost immediately.

8. Oatmeal mask

 

Oatmeal, with all the saccharides that are present in it, is growing in its popularity as an anti-tan treatment with every passing day. All you have to do is mix (cooked or uncooked) oats with cold water making a mask out of it. Apply this mask over the burned areas. It helps deal with sun burn effectively.

9. Cold and plain yogurt
When you know that you’ve stayed in the sun for too long and can feel the burn and heat on your skin, the first thing you should after getting back home is apply cold, plain yogurt over your skin. Yogurt is an immediate remedy that can cool your skin off and help it heal from the sun burn.

10. Green Tea

Green tea has got some amazing benefits when we drink it as well as when we use it externally. Using green tea for sun burns is quite simple. All you have to do is dip cotton balls into green tea and rub it all over your face. Better yet, use green tea bags and rub them onto your skin. Make sure that the green tea has cooled down however, before you use it on your skin.
